Designing a 3D-Printed Rollercoaster Clock, from idea to reality

TKSST: 3D Printed Rollercoaster

The Kid Should See This (KTSST) is an amazing site full of fascinating and informative videos that are safe for kids to watch - but don’t think they’re just for kids, I’ve loved every one I’ve seen so far.

This particular post had me entirely enthralled, and admittedly had me looking at 3D printers and the surrounding tech.

Neil Gaiman’s advice to aspiring writers

The Marginalian: Neil Gaiman’s Advice to writers

I love Neil Gaiman’s books - American Gods and Neverwhere captured my imagination and attention like few other books have.

This article has some great insights into his thinking on sticking at things, and not waiting for inspiration.

This is an old post, so the linked video and some of the other links don’t work, but at least there’s some awesome bits of advice from a genius writer captured.

The Blank Sheet Method for active learning

Farnam Street: Blank Sheet Method

This is another one from Farnam Street where Shane introduces a great tool for improving learning and understanding a subject.

The basics involve writing down everything you know about a subject before you start reading around it, then fill in the gaps and correct areas as you learn.

I’ve not implemented it yet, as I find my learning has less defined edges and I rarely sit down to understand a specific subject these days. I do have a few areas I want to improve on, so would love to try this out.

Adam Young Golf Training

Adam Young: Golf Training Promo Video

I came across Adam’s teaching a few years ago, and though I haven’t played much in the past year, I love getting his newsletter and training tips.

This video breaks down a lot of what he teaches - it’s not about what your swing looks like, it’s all about the ball contact and what your club face is doing at that point.

His tips and teaching have definitely changed my game, and implementing some of them helped me hit my longest tracked drive of 279 yards!

Smashed it further than I thought I could!

Isometric Projection in Game Development

Pikuma: Isometric Projection in Game Development

For my final year project at Uni, I created a 3D Isometric point and click game in Lingo (Macromedia Director) that almost worked…

I wish this article had existed 20 years earlier as it would have saved me weeks of research into how to tackle the tile engine creation!

I had to bookmark this when I came across it - maybe one day I’ll dig out my old code and see if I can convert it to modern day JS.

Building functional mass with Kettlebells

Kettlebell Kings: Building functional mass with Kettlebells

Further thinking about my training style once my foot has recovered, I’m interested in what I can do with Kettlebells.

Initially for doing workouts at home, but also most gyms I come across in hotels and while travelling have them, so it would be good to have some familiarity with them.

Emilie Sideboard from Heals

Heals: Emilie Sideboard

I should have mentioned I have eclectic collections of bookmarks, but with an eye on building furniture for our house, this piece was really inspiring, and I’m determined to make something along these lines in the next year or two.

Kelly Starrett’s 10-Minute Morning Full-Body Mobility Routine

Kelly Starrett: 10-Minute Morning Routine

I bought a copy of Kelly’s book Becoming a Supple Leopard a while back, and although I’m stronger for being able to lift it (it’s huge), and I got a lot from it when I was lifting heavy weights I’ve not worked with his mobility ideas for a few years now.

This ten minute morning routine is simple and easy to follow. It’s getting it into my morning routine regularly enough to make it a habit that hasn’t happened yet!

Werner Herzog’s Nihilist Penguin

Slightly depressing and sad in places, but hey that’s nihilism for you, this look at the potential for insanity in penguins made me stop and think.

DIY floating shelves for easy storage

Yellow Brick Home: DIY Floating Shelves

To paraphrase Uncle Ben from Spider-Man: with a new house comes great project responsibilities… or something like that.

Anyway, in our newly decorated and fireplaced living room, we need shelves. Strong shelves to hold lots of books, so this guide is going to be super helpful in the coming month - the wood is already purchased along with some fun toys like a nail gun and circular saw!

A syllabus for generalists

Syllabus Project

Some links I bookmark are short, quick, simple reads. This is not one of those.

It’s a rabbit hole and a treasure trove waiting to be fallen in to, full of knowledge and information.

I’m going to try and put this into some kind of calendar so I can learn at a pace that works for me. I wonder if there’s an app out there for that kind of thing?

UFO50 - 50 pixel style games

50 Games

I don’t have a Windows computer, but if I did (and I’d be tempted to install a VM just for this), then I’d download this game collection in a heartbeat.

It looks like a great collection of games that take me back to a time where I learned how to write games in Basic on my Spectrum 48.
